Al Nahda raises eye health awareness

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Health (MoH) represented by Al Nahdah Hospital’s Ophthalmology department on Sunday marked World Glaucoma Week (WGW) which is observed in March every year with the aim of creating awareness concerning glaucoma. On this occasion, the hospital organized several activities and educational events at the hospital’s main entrance. The number of people with glaucoma is expected to increase to 80 million by 2020 and is likely to afflict adults over 40 years especially those with family history of the disease or who suffer from recurrent eye inflammations and are Diabetic. Glaucoma is considered one of the main causes of visual-impairment and can be avoided and treated if diagnosed early.


The event aimed at introducing the disease, its risks, and the available treatment methods. Number of the Ministry’s officials and Ophthalmology Residents from the Oman Medical Specialties Board (OMSB) participated in the event with educational lectures. They highlighted diseases complications as well as the significance of regular eye checks especially for people over 40 years of age and those vulnerable for the disease. Moreover, management of sight weakness was addressed. The event included introductory exhibition that contained number of health educational materials from companies and some of the hospital’s departments in addition to Al Noor Association. The exhibition witnessed a large attendance of both citizens and residents.
