MUSCAT: Air Arabia will add two more weekly flights between Suhar and Sharjah from today, taking total services to six per week following approval from the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA).

The Sharjah-based low cost carrier Air Arabia announced that it will begin operating flights to Suhar from July 9.

Suhar is Air Arabia’s third destination in Oman. The carrier currently operates daily flights to Muscat and Salalah. Air Arabia is one of the first international carriers to operate to Suhar. PACA recently allowed Qatar Airways to fly three times a week between Doha and Suhar from August 8.

Qatar Airways said it will operate Airbus A320 aircraft on this route, featuring 12 seats in Business Class and 132 seats in Economy Class.

The national budget airline, SalamAir, operates four flights to Salalah.

The airport is being built within the proximity of the major commercial, industrial and economic centres of Suhar, including the Port of Sohar and the Special Economic Zone.

Sohar Airport is expected to provide an alternative, quicker route for travellers wishing to access Suhar and the north of Oman. The airport will also serve as a new gateway for cargo and courier traffic in northern Oman.

In addition, Sohar Airport will serve as an emergency alternative to Muscat International Airport for passengers and cargo coming into the Sultanate.

The airport will have a capacity of 250,000 passengers per annum (PPA).The airport will be able to manage up to 50,000 tonnes of cargo per annum.
