MUSCAT, JAN 19 - The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) has reiterated on adherence to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) standards in the manufacture of cream-like food products.
According to a statement from the ministry, the GSO (Gulf Standardization Organization) standard should be used in the manufacturing, packaging, transportation and storage of cream-like products.
“Manufactures should abide by the production rules and health conditions mentioned in the Unified Gulf Standard Specifications No 21 regarding health conditions in food factories and their workers”, said the statement.
The GCC standard specification confirms that the manufacturing materials must be completely free of pork products and its derivatives.
It has a set of information bases and knowledge platforms that serve standardisation activities and help specialists make the right decisions.
However, the statement doesn’t figure out the penalties for violation of the directive.
Nawal bint Suweid al Abriyah, head of the Food and Agricultural Products Division in the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology at MoCI, said, “the manufacturing materials must be completely free of pork products and its derivatives.’’
In addition to this, the product must be free of bitterness, acidity or tingling or taste of soap and mineral or any strange taste.
It must also be free of pathogenic microbes or their secretions or whatever leads to undesirable changes.
Al Abriyah said, “The addition of fruits, fruit juices, natural flavours and natural honey is allowed. Sugar can be added to only for whipped or flavoured cream.’’
The use of fixatives, acidity regulators and textures is permitted in accordance with the Omani Gulf Standard for Food Additives.
“You know that the cream-like products are food products made by emulsification of liquid or dried skimmed milk or its saturations or other fat free milk solids to which natural oils are added”, she said.
The sterilized ‘cream-like’ is known to be ‘cream-like’ which is sterilized in containers sold to the consumers.
“The cream-like is which is treated on high temperature and packaged in sterile conditions. The specification also includes content of the vegetable fat as specified in the specification”, said Nawal al Abriyah.
The Gulf Standardization Organization was established to promote the economic integration, including the unification of standards and metrology in the member states; to ensure the safety and quality of the goods.
