Muscat, Dec 16 - Despite the efforts by Muscat Municipality to remove dumped or neglected cars, local residents complain about the accumulation of such vehicles on open areas, roads and sidewalks, posing environmental and security risks.
A recent report said, “Apart from depriving individuals of their right to use public parking and roads, such neglected vehicles also pose threat to environment as they become a breeding ground for insects and rodents due to the accumulation of dust and waste.” As the vehicles are exposed to the sun for prolonged periods, they could cause fires.
A report quoting Eng Badr bin Ali al Bahri, Director-General, Directorate General of Muscat Municipality, said, “Stickers were pasted on 2,020 abandoned vehicles in Seeb in 2017, and the case forwarded to the concerned authorities to ensure there are no claims on these vehicles.” More than 1,000 vehicles were removed and move to a new yard. This year, 81 abandoned cars were found in Muttrah and 34 in Muscat.
As per law, the municipality can remove vehicles abandoned in public places at the expense of their owners 14 days after the pasting of stickers of notice on them.
An administrative fine shall be imposed on the vehicle owners: RO 200 for cars/buses that carry less than 15 passengers and bicycles; RO 400 for trucks; RO 1,000 for vehicles used for transporting hazardous materials. Vehicle owners will be fined RO 5 a day in case of delay.
The municipality coordinates with the Royal Oman Police to sell the abandoned vehicles through public auction if the owner does not report to the municipality or pay dues within 90 days.
