Muscat, Feb 4 - The Dhofar Governorate saw a total of 826,000 tourists in 2018, at a daily average of 8,000, said Maitha bint Saif al Mahrouqi, Under-Secretary, Ministry of Tourism.
She said the efforts of government agencies and private sector helped in the quick restoration of tourist sites in Dhofar following two major cyclones in 2018.
The efforts of the ministry helped bring more tourists to the governorate, she said.
Many new facilities opened in Dhofar, including 32 hotels of different categories, offering 3,500 rooms during May-December 2018.
Seven more hotels in the two- to five-star categories will open, offering 1,851 rooms.
Meanwhile, the project of surveying visitors in Salalah Tourism Season is expected to help the authorities develop appropriate plans and improve infrastructure in Dhofar in particular and Oman in general.
RO 260 is the average expenditure of Qatari visitors during the Salalah tourist season 2018, the highest expenditure compared with other nationalities, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information.
UAE topped the list of tourists from the GCC at 76,700, followed by Saudi Arabia (53,700), Bahrain (8,700), Kuwait (6,200) and Qatar (8,300).
Out of the total number of tourists, 79.5 per cent travelled by road to Salalah in 2018, a 3.74 per cent increase from 2017.
At 72 per cent, Omanis topped the list of tourists.
Tourists to Salalah spent 6,101 nights in 2018 compared with 4,350 in 2017, a 2.4 per cent rise.
