Visitors to the Muscat International Book Fair were witness to a rare object: an 800-million-year-old granite rock.

“It is the oldest rock we have in Oman. It was found on the Kahwan Mountain in Al Sharqiyah Governorate,” said Ayman al Shouily, Oman Geological Society, which has displayed the rock.

In addition to the oldest rock, there were other attractions such as the fossil wood rock which is attached to a rock. It is millions of years old.

It is a tree found in tropical lands and definitely not in the current climatic conditions of the Sultanate. This wood fossil has been discovered in the desert of Oman.

“It tells you about the climatic changes the land has gone through,” Ayman added. The book fair, being held at Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre, will conclude on March 3.
