MUSCAT: The Ministry of Tourism (MoT) will set up seven foreign representative offices to promote the Sultanate as a major tourism destination in 14 countries. These nations are promising tourism markets. These offices organise tourism events and participate in international tourism conferences and exhibitions to introduce the unique tourism elements of the Sultanate. Mohammed bin Saif al Riyami, acting director of foreign offices in the MoT, said: “The Ministry of Tourism is studying new general strategies this year aimed at entering new markets and setting up tourism representative offices in a number of countries such as Iran, China and Russia.”

These efforts, he said, are aimed at attracting tourists from around the world, increasing promotional programmes and introducing Sultanate as a major destination for tourists.

These representative offices will spread promotional programmes in the world markets through local and foreign companies.

These offices will represent Oman’s tourism at international tourism forums. They will showcase Oman’s tourism products on such platforms, said Al Riyami.

He said these offices, which are distributed in the Gulf region, have their head office in Dubai and serve four countries of the region. Also, there is an officer in Saudi Arabia who works under it.

For Asia, the representative office is in Indian city of Mumbai and in Europe, it is in Britain. Besides Ireland, there is an office in Germany, covering Germany and German-speaking countries such as Switzerland and Austria. It has an office each in Amsterdam, Paris and Milan.

He said one of the most important plans for future expansion was to attract tourists from non-traditional markets, particularly from East Asia, Russian and Iran.

That is because these are markets for group travels. This helps in attracting a large number of tourists who travel in groups of 400 to 500.

The ministry is working as an integrated system. It is preparing all services required by tourists, whether they are from Russia, China or Iran.

These facilities include varieties of food items of their choice. He said the ministry is also focusing on Japanese market to attract tourists.

He said the ministry plans to increase the number of hotel rooms and increase the number of nights that tourists spend in the Sultanate by adding more activities in all governorates.

Apart from its efforts to attract more and more tourists from abroad, the ministry is also trying to encourage and activate local tourists.
