52pc of offenders are expatriates

MUSCAT: Statistics show that 52 per cent of offenders involved in crimes committed in 2015 were non-Omanis. Generally, crimes fell by 17 per cent last year compared to the previous year and year 2015 registered least number of crimes since 2013. Two-third of crimes were reported in the governorates of Muscat, North Al Batinah and Dhofar, while the governorates of Musandam and Al Wusta registered the lowest crime rate of one per cent each. The governorates of Musandam and Al Wusta registered the lowest offender rate of 2 per cent and 1 per cent, respectively.


The 2015 Statistical Features of Crimes and Offenders published by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) shows that four crimes occurred per 1,000 of the population. The crime index in Al Buraimi Governorate registered 30 per 1,000 of the population mainly due to an increase in violations of the Labour Law, Foreigners Residence Law and entering the country illegally. The statistics shows that among every 1,000 of the population there are six offenders.
