MUSCAT: The Ministry of Heritage and Culture, in cooperation with the mission from the Italian University of Bologna, completed the third phase of excavations at Al Khatam Archaeological Tower, as part of the works for the rehabilitation of the archaeological Bat, Al Khatam Al Ain sites in the Wilayat of Ibri.

These sites are listed on the World Heritage List.

This tower features 14 rooms accessed through a central corridor located in the centre well.

This phase of excavations revealed that the tower settled on three periods during the third and second millennia BC through the findings of the study conducted in the site.

The findings represented in bronze dagger and a collection of decorated stone pots, in addition to a white limestone rock with a picture of an animal (perhaps a deer or a cow). It is likely that this rock was reused from a tomb of the Umm Al Nar period (approximately 2600-2200 BC).

The Ministry of Heritage and Culture carries out several rehabilitation and documentation programmes in a bid to reach solutions to many incomplete issues on the site in compliance with the Unesco guiding principles.
