32 dead as tour bus crashes in Taiwan

TAIPEI: At least 32 people were killed and more were taken to hospital after a tour bus crashed on a highway in Taiwan on Monday night.


The bus was carrying 45 people and 13 of them were sent to nearby hospitals, according to the local fire department. Television footage showed pictures of rescue crews trying to raise the overturned bus on the side of the highway with ambulances and fire trucks lined up along the bend of the road.


The bus had 45 people on board including the driver and a tour guide when the incident happened at a junction connecting two motorways inthe Nangang district of eastern Taipei, the state-run Central News Agency (CNA) quoted firefighters as saying.


The bus had taken a group of mostly senior citizens on a day trip to a popular cherry blossom viewing site in central Taiwan, CNA said.


According to the government, the accident claimed 32 lives. The remaining people, some of whom were seriously injured and found under the overturned vehicle on the ramp, were sent to hospitals nearby.
