By Vinod Nair — MUSCAT: May 1 - Authorities have seized around 25 tonnes of fish that were found to be unsuitable for human consumption. The raid was conducted in the Ghala area by the municipality officials in Bausher in coordination with the authorities from the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. PACP said that boxes containing around 650kg of King Fish were seized and said the matter will be referred to the competent authorities for legal process along with the gathered evidence.

Residents have been claiming that the illegal sale of fish continue to rampant in some parts of Muscat despite frequent raids conducted by the municipality. “Fish are sold illegally in open spaces violating all health safety norms. I blame the customers who encourage such illegal sale of food products to save a few baizas. There should be proper awareness campaigns on food safety along with legal crackdowns,” Yahya, a resident of Ghubra. “It is the price factor but people should realise they are paying heavy price in the long-term,” he added.

Meanwhile, PACP said that coordination with Muscat Municipality over 124,000 of items (worth over one million) have been removed from the market in the recent years. The seized items include food items, cosmetics, cigarettes, and readymade garments, spices, and perfumes and oils, car engines and other luxury non-conforming to the standards. PACP said that it is taking all efforts to protect consumers from all sorts of irregularities that may encroach on their rights under the Consumer Protection Act and other laws and legislation issued in this regard. A court in Suwaiq in a ruling penalised the violators of the consumer protection law, which included imprisonment and fines worth over RO 2,000.
