20 sailors rescued after cargo ship sinks off Oman

A Tanzanian-flagged merchant ship sank off Oman coast near the Al Jazer wilayat in the Al Wusta governate on, reported the Royal Oman Police. The crew members onboard the ship were rescued by an Omani citizen, whose timely act was widely appreciated by the authorities.


As per the information, the ship had left the port in the UAE and was on its way to the port of Eritrea in the Red Sea. The ship was ferrying construction materials, including steel, and the crew belonged to various nationalities.


The Ministry of Transport of Communications said the incident occurred at an estimated distance of six miles north-east of Ras al-Lakbi in the wilayat.


The statement added that the ship was loaded with general cargo consisting of sand and iron bars with 20 sailors on board, all rescued by a fisherman in the region.


The Omani citizen had alerted the local police station who took the crew members to the Al Jazer hospital. All essential medical tests were conducted at the hospital and the members are said to be in good health.


The authorities are in touch with the local shipping agents to ensure their safe return home.


The Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs (MECA) too confirmed about the incident and affirmed the commitment towards protecting the Omani environment.


The combined rescue efforts were carried out in coordination with the Maritime Security Center, the Royal Oman Navy and the Coast Guard to preserve the maritime security, and environmental and marine wealth in the Sultanate, said the Ministry of Transport of Communications.


The ministry also denied the news of the sinking of a Kuwaiti oil vessel.
