Two people were killed, several injured, and some critical when two passenger buses collided on the Salalah route on Thursday.

According to officials at Nizwa hospital and the Qarn al Alam police station, the victims were both expatriates — Mohammed Naushad (Bangladesh) and a woman from Philippines).

According to Royal Oman Police (ROP), the accident happened at 11.54 pm on Thursday in the Qarn al Alam area.

A official at the Gulf Transport Company (GTC) in Salalah said its bus travelling from Salalah to Dubai (15 passengers onboard) met with an accident with a bus operated by Gulf Line Transport (GLT) travelling from Muscat to Salalah. The GLT official in Salalah refused to divulge details but confirmed its bus was travelling from Muscat to Salalah and had around 20 to 25 passengers onboard.

Patients were initially transferred to hospitals in Haima, Qarn al Alam, Adam and Nizwa. According to Ministry of Health, one person was admitted to the hospital in Adam while 28 others were admitted to hospitals in Haima, Qarn al Alam and Nizwa.

The Nizwa hospital received the bodies of both the dead persons. Some of the injured were admitted to intensive care units. Among the injured ten men and two women needed surgeries. Twenty-two injured were transferred to Nizwa hospital after preliminary investigations at Adam hospital.

The Nizwa hospital confirmed the two patients are in ICU, one of which has been transferred to Khoula Hospital in Muscat. “Some patients have been already discharged,” the official there said.

The MoH said six patients admitted at Haima hospital are in good health and adequate First Aid and additional medical staff were mobilised at the receiving hospitals to face the emergency situation.

It may be noted that 18 people were killed when a Salalah-Dubai passenger bus of GTC collided with a truck and car at a roundabout on the road connecting Fahud and Ibri in May 1, 2016. Last month, two people (including the bus driver) lost their lives when a Salalah-bound passenger bus collided with a truck on the accident-prone Adam-Thumrait road, 45 km from Haima. The bus was operated by the Salalah Line transport had 38 passengers on board, including the driver.
