Mwasalat has registered a growth rate of 48.5 per cent, carrying more than 2.2 million passengers in the first half of this year compared with 1.4 million passengers in the same period last year. From January 1 to June 30, more than 12,000 passengers travelled on Mwasalat buses on all local routes in the Muscat Governorate and on intercity lines to various governorates in the Sultanate, says the company’s latest survey.
The national transport company recorded peak passenger travel on the first day of Eid al Fitr, with the number exceeding 24,000 — the highest in the company’s history since its inception.
The total number of passengers in the Governorate of Muscat in the first six months of 2017 is as follows: Ruwi-Mabela route (790,000), Ruwi-Wadi Kabir (360,000), Ruwi-Amerat (340,000), Al Khoud-SQU-Burj Al Sahwa (240,000), Ruwi-Mutrah-Muscat (190,000) and Ruwi-Wadi Adai (100,000). Al Mabela Station-Al Mabela South route carried more than 21,000 passengers, bringing the total number of passengers travelling on internal routes in Muscat to 2,060,428.
As for the travel to other governorates and the city of Dubai, the UAE, the company carried 146,955 passengers.
The increase in the company’s growth rate reflects people’s awareness of public transport and its services, including free Wifi on board. Omanis accounted for 40 per cent of the total number of passengers, which reflects the confidence of citizens in public transport and its benefits.
