By Kabeer Yousuf — MUSCAT: Feb. 5 - The Minister of Oil and Gas has urged both citizens and expats to “reduce their daily fuel consumption” in view of the spiralling fuel prices. “Support national cause while contributing to environment protection,” he said.

Ahmad al Harthy, Oman’s top racing driver, has shared some tips on how to reduce fuel consumption. They are: 1: Maintain your car in a proper condition so that it doesn’t require more fuel to be burnt than what is required.

Regularly check tyres and its air pressure. It’s not just to save fuel, but also for safety of the people inside the vehicle.

Plan your journeys in advance so that unnecessary driving can be avoided.

Driving attitude is very important. Be gentle on the road, not aggressive.

Keeping the engine on when you are away from it is “detrimental” for the car. Chances of theft too are high.

Keep the engine off when you have to wait longer at the signal. In the developing nations, people switch off the engines when the signal is red or a railway gate is closed.

Speed thrills, but kills too. Keep your vehicle within the speed limits.

Carpooling is an effective idea for saving fuel. Four people attending an event should not travel in four cars. Instead, they can travel in one car. They will also help strengthen ties with friends.

In future, authorities will definitely introduce high-occupancy vehicle lanes because it’s a way forward for accommodating more people in fewer vehicles.

Keep your windows and sunroof closed when driving because it lets less dust inside and helps save fuel.
