New York: Yemen is in a “dire” situation in rebel-held states, President Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi told the UN General Assembly on Thursday, as he called for international action against the Ansar Allah cadres.

Hadi appealed to the United Nations and the international community to “shoulder the responsibility” by applying pressure on the Ansar Allah to adhere to Security Council resolutions calling for their withdrawal.

They are refusing all calls for peace, and their Iranian backers are “stoking feelings of hatred and violence,” Hadi said.

He called on UN member states to push the rebels towards a compromise “to avoid more bloodshed and destruction and allow humanitarian assistance to reach the people who need it.”

Yemen has been ravaged by civil war since 2014 between Saudi-backed Hadi and the Ansar Allah, who are allied with former president Ali Abdullah Saleh. More than 5,100 civilians have been killed and more than 8,700 injured. — dpa
