There are many roles that individuals play, but women play different roles – from home to the boardroom. While celebrating the Omani Women’s Day, which falls on Tuesday, let’s shine light on some achievers in our midst.

Standing before the painting, ‘Woman Behind the Window’ with the artist herself was a journey through the mind of a woman from the past. Sana al Humaidi has been painting since childhood, but the ‘Woman Behind the Window’ is a series she did with 15 paintings.

Each woman is different. Different colours and expressions, but the window is always there. The hue varies too. It is orange in one and green in the other, and so on. Does the hue depict the moods?

Let’s leave the question unanswered. Sometimes, it’s better when things are left unsaid.

“Women in the past stayed indoors most of the time. They worked hard and looked after most of the issues related to home. But they mainly looked at the world outside through their windows. Today it is different. Women are pursuing their chosen paths, achieving their dreams and contributing to society,” said Al Humaidi.

Women of the past as well as the present have the inner strength. May be women have more opportunities, but they have their own set of challenges.

There are windows and today the window exists in our minds. They say the eyes are windows of our soul. But that is for others to see. May be women should look more closely through the window to their heart and mind. Both are important because heart is where our emotions rule and the mind is where we make our decisions.

Emotions are definitely one of the biggest strengths of women, when used rightly. Emotions give us strength in artistic areas and in understanding people.

So the window needs to be visited very often so much so that we understand ourselves really well.

Designer and entrepreneur Shadya al Ismaily says a woman can achieve any dream as long as she has the passion for what she wants, has the ability to challenge herself further, be herself and learn to collaborate.

Being original is one of the biggest secrets of successful people. There are billions of us in this world and we all have different fingerprints.

We all have different experiences in our lives which make each of us unique. Everyone is created with a talent and it would be so defeating if they are not allowed to pursue their talent. We celebrate successful people, but what about those who had the potential but could not pursue it?

That is where you need to be your own guide. People will have doubts, but all one needs is focus. Multilingual poet Lubna al Balushi says many did not believe in her dream, but she heard some positive voices so she stayed tuned to those voices and her own that came from her heart.

There is a lot of noise that surround us not because they mean to be negative, it is only because they are trying to find their own voices. So how can we abandon our own dreams for the sake of the noise?

Listen to the sea. The rhythm of the sea calms us because nature is there to fine-tune us. But most of the time we are off tune and too busy to listen to the beat of the nature.

Take a moment, look into the windows of the mind and heart, listen to the rhythm of the nature. Are we in sync? Or are we skipping a beat? Most importantly, are we singing the wrong lyrics. Let us find the words to sing the song of life.
