WIPO hails Sultanate’s efforts in IP protection

MUSCAT: Francis Gurry, Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), has hailed the Sultanate’s steady efforts in the field of intellectual property protection and encouraging international cooperation in its related fields. He was addressing a press conference at Inter-Continental Hotel Muscat in which he commended the subsidy provided by the


Sultanate to raise awareness in this field.


He noted that the Sultanate participated in international protection applications and in developing WIPO’s plans and programmes related to taking measures to develop new effective guidelines for intellectual property.


The WIPO chief also pointed out that the Sultanate’s national innovation strategy will enhance innovation in economy and competitiveness. “WIPO, in cooperation with Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), will organise a summer programme on intellectual property to enhance awareness in this field,” he added.


“The global trend now focuses on international markets, especially there are many technologies that cover IP. WIPO’s work is guided by 26 international conventions that provide the frameworks and bases for intellectual property to help states protect the rights system,” he continued.


Dr Fuad bin Jaafar al Sajwani, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, also received Gurry. The meeting discussed several matters of common concern on areas of research cooperation between the Sultanate and WIPO in the agriculture, livestock and fisheries sectors, as well as means of enhancing and developing the cooperation in these sectors. The meeting was attended by a number of officials at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.


Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamoud al Busaidy, Secretary-General of the Foreign Ministry, also received Gurry.


The meeting discussed aspects of cooperation between the two sides and means of enhancing the benefits from WIPO services, in addition to exchanging experiences and knowledge.


Meanwhile, a delegation from WIPO also visited the National Museum. The guests toured the Earth and Human Gallery, Land and the People Gallery, the Timeline Gallery, which are dedicated to highlighting the treasures of the cultural heritage of Oman. — ONA
