By Lakshmi Kothaneth — MUSCAT: Jan. 25 - Al Awabi, a wilayat in Al Batinah Governorate, recorded the maximum rainfall of 33 mm from January 17 until Wednesday. It was followed by Madha in Musandam (25 mm) and Muscat (22 mm). The total quantum of rainfall recorded in these places during the period are as follows: Saiq 21 mm, Yanqul 21 mm, Bukha 21 mm, Buraimi 18 mm, Qurayat 18 mm, Khasab 17, Rustaq 16 mm, Sunaina 14 mm, Al Khabourah 13 mm, Suwaiq 11 mm, Al Amerat 11 mm, Bidbid 11 mm and Izki 10 mm. Low pressure triggered rains in the northern parts from Musandam to the Coast of Oman Sea. It soon saw other governorates receiving rain from January 17. The Met office has predicted a likelihood of rain in the coastal areas of Oman Sea and South Al Sharqiyah Governorate until early Thursday.

According to Nasser Said al Ismaily, of Oman Met office, Public Authority for Civil Aviation, “chances (of rain) are more on the coast between Qurayat and Sur”. Clear to partly cloudy skies are likely to prevail on Thursday. Sea is expected to be moderate. Arabian Sea is expected to be moderate, but along the coast of Dhofar Governorate, it is likely to be “moderate to rough” with waves reaching to a height of 2 to 2.5 metres. “This is because the north-westerly wind has just reached the Arabian Sea,” said Al Ismaily. Community weather watchers in the Sultanate have described the much-anticipated winter rains as Suqia or ‘answer to the prayers’.
