By Fahad Al Ghadani — MUSCAT: April 5 - Fishing for recreation and sport will now require a permit from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, according to a new decision issued by Dr Fuad bin Jaafar al Sajwani, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. The decision states that recreational fishing is only permitted if it involves the use of fishing hooks and practiced along Oman’s shores. Permits for recreational fishing at sea will only be considered for applicants who are older than 18 years, and medically fit with good swimming skills. Expatriate residents with valid residency permits can apply for fishing permits, although fishing from a commercial perspective is disallowed, it noted.

A permit is valid for one year, renewable for a further 30 days. The fee for either new permits or renewals is RO 30. However, a 24-hour permit is also available for RO 2. According to the new decision, permits may be requested by owner and operators of boats and cruise vessels belonging to maritime clubs, establishments and companies specialising in organising recreational fishing activities for tourists. The clubs in question should have their marine vessels registered with the competent authorities and hold valid licenses.

A fishing license will include applicant’s name, address, license number, personal identification number, photograph, boat or ship license number, navigational license number, marine club name, authorised fishing area, license date and date of expiry. The new regulation prohibits recreational fishing between sunset and sunrise and also bars the permit holder from offering his catch for commercial purposes. Fish caught during a fishing trip should not exceed 20 kg. The permit holder is also required to keep a record of the types and quantities of fish caught during the trip.

Defaulters are liable to pay fines ranging from RO 20 to RO 300. Penalties can be doubled for repeat offences, and the permit can be cancelled altogether.
