As different parts of the Sultanate witness rain after a long time, people welcome it in their own way. Many prefer to go out for a picnic during rain or go and watch wadis and enjoy the lovely weather.

However, some reckless youth seem to prefer a more daring outing like wadi racing.

A video circulating on social media shows a group of youth waiting at the source of the wadi and vrooming in their cars.

Many youths wait for the rainy season to kick off wadi racing. However, many have lost their lives in the wadis, and the sport has not been legally recognised.

The traffic law says: “Without prejudice to the measures prescribed in this law or to any more severe punishment provided for in another law, a penalty of not more than three months or a fine not exceeding RO 500 or both penalties shall be imposed on the following acts: a driver who deliberately crosses wadis in a way that would endanger his

life or the lives of passengers or others.”

The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has asked the people to be careful when crossing wadis as the Met Office has predicted more rains until the middle of next week.

“Motorists and people must keep a watch on water levels in the low lying areas as well as wadis cutting across roads,” it warned.
