Hanoi: A Vietnamese oil executive, who was allegedly kidnapped by Vietnamese agents in Berlin last year, was on Monday handed a second life sentence for corruption. Trinh Xuan Thanh, the former chairman of PetroVietnam Construction (PVC), a subsidiary of the state oil company PetroVietnam (PVN), was sentenced alongside seven other defendants, who received between six and 16 years in prison, for corruption at the state oil firm.

“Nothing has changed, he still received life sentence,” Nguyen VanQuynh, one of Thanhs’s defence lawyers said.

Monday’s sentence in the Hanoi City Court was linked to a project Thanh approved for PVP Land, a subsidiary of PVC to sell to a private developer, costing the government a total of 49 billion dong (around $2 million) through the underselling of shares. — dpa
