The Uttaranchal Wing of the Indian Social Club Oman hosted a musical event featuring a renowned troupe of folk singers from Uttarakhand, India at Majan Continental Hotel Muscat on December 23.


Popular Uttarakhandi folk singers, Narendra Singh Negi, Kalpana Chouhan and Jitendra Tomkiyal, along with their exemplary team of musicians and orchestra regaled music lovers in Muscat.


The evening began with Negi’s Jagar, a hymn usually sung in the evening and some times in the morning, and he later presented many of his hit songs like Thando Re Thando Mera, Ghar Bati Chitthi Egyee etc.


This was followed by a series of popular folk songs, which were based on incidents of day-to-day life, nature, the seasons and harvest.


The songs by Kalpana persuaded ladies to dance with her and she mesmerised the crowd with her unique grace.


Tomkiyal’s rendition of his songs, made many among the audience nostalgic for their homeland, as the folk songs had the charming effect of transporting them to the succour of the hills of Uttarakhand. Accompanying the singers were Subash Panday on percussion, Vinod Chouhan on Keyboard and Vijay Bisht on octropad.


Dr Sathish Nambiar, Chairman, ISC Oman commended Govind Negi, Convener of the Uttaranchal Wing, for having carried out various events of interest for the community over the past 11 years of their existence as a wing of ISC.


Later, he felicitated the artistes as well as members of the management committee of ISC Uttaranchal Wing. The evening concluded with a vote of thanks by Co-convener of Uttaranchal Wing, Shiv Bahuguna.
