Muscat, July 5

Authorities issued a strict warning against violators of Oman’s health standards following the seizure of a large number of unhealthy water bottles.

In a surprise inspection on Wednesday, officials from the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) along with civic inspectors detected a large number of water containers and bottles kept in unhygienic storage facilities.

They were found to be not in conformity with the Sultanate’s standard specifications.

“The bottles have been destroyed and water samples sent to the Food Control Laboratory for examination,” said a statement from PACP.

The authorities, of late, have intensified inspections on storage facilities and market places to ensure water supplied in the Sultanate is hygienic and meets the specified standards.

“Any dealer or supplier who violates regulations will be liable for legal action,” said the statement following the confiscation of water bottles in the raid in Al Dakhiliyah on Wednesday.

“If stored in an outdoor temperature of 40 degrees Celsius and above, there is a strong possibility that polycarbonate material will leach out and the water can taste of plastic,” says a study.

Also when the plastic bottles are exposed to sunlight, they release bisphenol A (BPA), which is harmful to health, it adds. “Water bottles need to be stored in a clean, dry, hygienic place, on a palette, and away from direct sunlight. To strictly abide by the rules would mean not leaving the bottles exposed to direct sunlight for even a minute,” urges the study.
