UNFP hails Sultanate’s health achievements

MUSCAT: Aser Toson, Representative of the United Nations Fund for Population — the semi regional Office for GCC States, described the Sultanate’s development indicators as ‘Positive’.


During the press conference which he held at the Semi Regional Office for the GCC States in Muscat on Thursday, he said that the Ministry of Health has made universal health achievements on the level of the Arab World and succeeded in providing comprehensive health services.


He also said that the regional ministerial conference will be held during the period from October 30 to November 1 at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for West Asia (ESCWA) premises in Lebanon.


He added that the role of the UNFP — the Sub Regional Office for the GCC States in the Sultanate handles a number of issues under the theme ‘population development’.


It maintains cooperation with the National Center for Statistics and Information and other relevant ministries to help in drafting the population policies in the Sultanate and cover themes, such as ratio of youth, woman, health, birth rate, mortality rate, the expatriates, general income ration and family expenditure. The data collected on these areas help decision maker to take well-informed decisions.


He noted that the UNFP implements a number of projects in cooperation with the National Youths Commission including drafting the strategies and building capacities. It also implements a number of projects with the Ministry of Health including assessing the national programme for birth spacing. It also joins hands with the Ministry of Social Development to ensure women empower and prevent all forms of discrimination and violence. — ONA
