Unesco approves SQU’s chair for ophiolite studies

MUSCAT: The Earth Science Research Center (ESRC) of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has managed to provide equipment for research and analysis in the fields of geology and civil engineering. The centre has conducted two courses on the cutting of gemstones. ESRC has made a proposal for setting up a Unesco chair in ophiolite and the proposal has been accepted by the Unesco and the contract will be signed shortly. ESRC is currently taking part in the continental ophiolite drilling which lasts for three years.


This was stated by Prof Subhi Jabir, Director of ESRC. He added that the centre will finalise the strategic research related to studying and assessing construction stones marble in the Sultanate with 100 sites already assessed and the final report of the project is currently being prepared. The centre has published more than 20 researches since its inception in 2015 all of which are centreed on the presence of exploring ores how they came to existence in the Sultanate. ESRC focuses on conducting strategic researches on the surface and subsurface natural resources as well as providing consultancies and information on matters pertaining to geology, international research cooperation and setting up a geological database. The centre also provides training, workshops and intensive courses on geology, Jabir said.
