Ukrainian envoy hails bilateral relations

MUSCAT: Vadym Vakhrushev, Ukrainian non-resident Ambassador to the Sultanate described bilateral relations binding the Sultanate and Ukraine as firm and stable and distinguished with mutual respect thanks to the attention accorded by the two countries’ leaderships.


In remarks to ONA, on the 25th anniversary of the start of Omani-Ukrainian diplomatic relations, Vadym Vakhrushev said that Ukraine is working on boosting communications and cooperation with the Sultanate in various fields to the interest of the two friendly peoples.


He noted that economic, trade and investment cooperation between the two countries is considered among the most important pillars of joint cooperation with the trade exchange volume reaching $53.4 million in 2016, however this figure is lower than the $177.5-million worth of trade exchange registered in 2008.


He underscored the importance of taking additional steps to provide an approach that allows for sustaining and diversifying trade and economic cooperation by holding joint business forums, participating in the exhibitions held in both countries, exchanging visits, activating direct communications between the economic bodies of both countries and setting up Omani-Ukrainian firms.


Speaking about the procedures aimed at attracting Omani investors to Ukraine, Vadym Vakhrushev said investment opportunities are aplenty adding that during the past two years we witnessed an increasing keenness from Omani businessmen to enter the Ukrainian market. Omanis Owners of large firms began steps to obtain assets in the financial sector in Ukraine and they always expressed their readiness to participate in the privatisation of large projects in the field of port infrastructure in Ukraine.


There are many joint projects under consideration in various fields including the avoidance of double taxation, cooperation in higher education and scientific research, exempting holders of special and diplomatic passports from visa and setting up government committees for trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation, he said.


Speaking about the Omani-Ukrainian cultural cooperation, Vadym Vakhrushev stressed on the importance of launching joint projects which aimed at acquaintance and rapprochement between the two peoples the latest of which was when the oldest Ukrainian translation magazines published an issue dedicated to the Omani contemporary literature, the ambassador said.


Ambassador Vadym Vakhrushev expressed his thanks to the government of the Sultanate for the repeated support it presented to the Ukrainian side and for the Sultanate’s efforts to evacuate Ukrainian citizens from Yemen and freeing Ukrainian sailors from captivity by pirates.
