UAE pip Oman to the post, face Hong Kong in final

Kuala Lumpur: Oman’s winning streak in the Asia Cup Qualifiers came to a sorry end as it lost the do-or-die game to UAE by 13 runs to exit the tournament it had led until Tuesday’s game. Hong Kong beat Nepal by 3 wickets earlier in the day to book its place in the final.


Coming into its last game Oman, leading the table with 7 points from 4 matches, won the toss and elected to bowl first. UAE struggling against some tight bowling by Oman but kept on forging partnerships to reach a fighting 208 for 8 in 50 overs. Rohan Mustafa led the way with a solid 71 off 104 balls. Ashfaq Ahmed (24 off 32) and Abdul Shakoor (21 not out off 24) were the other notable scorers.


Captain Zeeshan Maqsood and Ahmed Fayyaz Butt claimed two wickets each.


Oman suffered an early setback, losing opener Jatinder Singh in the 3rd over but a 44-run second wicket partnership between opener Aqib Ilyas, who topscored with 45 off 43, and Vaibhav Wategaonkar guided the team to a solid 60 for 1 in the 14th over before Aqib (45 off 43) was caught and bowled by wily Ahmed Raza. The middle order batsmen all got starts but could not stay on to guide Oman to victory as it was dismissed for 195 in 47.2 overs. Naseem Khushi (27 off 30), Muhammed Nadeem (23 off 48), Ajay Lacheta (22 off 26) and Khawar Ali (20 off 46) were the other main scorers.


Rohan Mustafa, Amir Hayat and Mohammed Naveed all took two wickets each.


The final will be played on September 6.

Zeeshan Maqsood 2-21, Ahmed Fayyaz Butt 2-43) beat Oman 195 all out in 47.2 overs (Aqib Ilyas 45 – 7x4, Naseem Khushi 27 not out – 1x4, 1x6, Muhammed Nadeem 23 – 1x4. Rohan Mustafa 2-32, Amir Hayat 2-48, Mohammed Naveed 2-51) by 13 runs.
