MUSCAT: The Ministry of Transport and Communications represented by the Directorate General of Maritime Affairs will celebrate the International Seafarers Day today under the patronage of Dr Hamad bin Said al Oufi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries for Fisheries, in the presence of Said bin Hamdoon al Harthy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications for Ports and Maritime Affairs at the Grand Millennium Hotel.

The ceremony includes the speech of the Ministry, the launch of new forms of maritime competence certificate and seafarer identity document, as well as a review of the message of the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation on this occasion.

The ceremony will honour a group of Omani sailors who work in some government agencies and companies and honour the best graduation project from Oman International Maritime College in Sohar, as well as honouring two old Omani seafarers.

The ceremony, held by the ministry for the sixth year in a row, coincides with the celebration of many countries of the world on this occasion called for by the International Maritime Organization in recognition of the efforts of sailors in all countries.

The ministry also aims to highlight its efforts to improve the regulatory aspects of maritime affairs through cooperation with private companies and institutions working in this field, which sponsors the event annually.
