By Kabeer Yousuf — MUSCAT: April 16 - Oman’s Film Censorship and Classification Department under the Ministry of Information has tightened its classification rules. Accordingly, action will be taken against theatres that allow children to watch movies with ‘P’ or ‘G’ certification. The new measure is a follow-up to the rule passed by the department three years ago. Although the previous circular was displayed prominently in theatres across the country, children accompanied by families were exempted, the theatre owners have said.

With the ministry conducting random checks to ensure theatres adhere to the rule, children will no longer be able to watch the movies meant for grown-ups. “We have started inspections to ensure theatres are adhering to the ministry’s rules. Checks are carried out from time to time,” said a senior official from the department. “I went with my family to watch a movie, but had to return as my 9-year-old son was denied entry,” said an expatriate salesperson.

The ministry certifies films in six categories: U (Universal) children are allowed to watch; G (children can watch it with or without an accompanying adult); PG (children allowed to watch along with parents); PG12 (children above 12 years, along with parents); 15 (children above 15 years); and 18 (those above 18).
