MUSCAT, FEB 7 -

Oman and Iran are set to launch a new round of discussions to help flesh out the specifics of an agreement reached in 2013 that will pave the way for Iranian natural gas to be supplied to the Sultanate.

In talks that were due to commence in the Iranian capital late yesterday, both sides are also expected to finalise a partnership deal covering the proposed liquefaction of Iranian gas at the Sultanate’s LNG facilities in Sur, Mehr News Agency (MRA) said in a report.

Heading the respective sides at the talks will be Iran’s Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh and Dr Mohammed bin Hamed al Rumhy, Oman’s Minister of Oil and Gas, the agency said.

Plans for the supply of Iranian gas from the Kish field to the Sultanate centre on the construction of a 200km pipeline that will deliver around 1.5 million cubic feet of gas per day in the first phase of the project. Both sides will also deliberate on the revised route of the pipeline and its implications for the overall project economics.

High-ranking oil officials from Oman and Iran recently held a joint session with representatives of Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) to discuss a possible role for the Korean firm in the execution of the project. INTECSEA of the Netherlands has also offered to step in as a partner in the construction of the gas pipeline. The Dutch firm has previously being involved in the construction of submarine pipelines in the South Pars field of Iran.

Part of the gas supply is proposed to be converted into LNG in Oman and exported abroad.
