Representatives of the Taliban and Afghanistan’s leadership plan to participate in peace talks in Moscow next month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday. The planned meeting, on September 4, is intended to pave the way for a peace deal for Afghanistan, devastated by decades of war. “The initial reaction has been positive,” Lavrov told reporters in the southern Russian city of Sochi, according to an official transcript. “I hope it (the meeting) will be productive.”
