ROME: Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina stunned Romanian favourite Simona Halep 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to win the WTA event at the Rome Masters on Sunday.
Svitolina booked her place in the final on Saturday when Spanish semifinal opponent Garbine Muguruza retired injured as she trailed 4-1 to the Ukrainian. Svitolina, seeded eighth, seized the day, overcoming a tough first set against the sixth-seeded Romanian, who won the Madrid Masters last week, to claim her maiden title in the Italian capital. — AFP
