MUSCAT: The National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) is currently conducting a survey on accessibility to information technology to provide some important indicators on the extent of ICT usage in the Sultanate.

The sample of the survey, which runs until January 17, covers 2,500 Omanis and expatriates in the age group of 18 years and above in all governorates of the Sultanate using three languages: Arabic, English and Urdu.

The survey also provides indicators on the rate of ownership and use of smartphones, their various applications, and the percentage of households that have a computer (desktop, laptop or tablet) and percentages of individuals using the computer.

It also provides percentages of proficiency in basic computer skills, such as sending e-mail, using simple mathematical formulas in account programmes (eg Excel), creating electronic presentations, writing software using specialised programming language and other skills.

The indicators available from this survey will be used by many international institutions, such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), to identify the achievements made by many countries around the world on the use of information and communication technology, and to rank countries according to their achievements in this major area.
