Muscat Dec 30 - For any graduate just out of college, his/her first aim is to find a job that suits their qualification. In the Sultanate, fresh graduates are faced with six challenges, which include lack of employment opportunities.

A study conducted by Youth Vision shows there are six obstacles before the fresh graduates before they can settle in their first job. Fresh graduates were the focus of the study.

Bagging a government job is a dream for most fresh graduates. Many respondents blamed the lack of opportunities in the sector.

The study shows 33.3 per cent of the surveyed, the biggest percentage, feel lack of employment opportunities in the government sector is a huge setback for them.

However, 20.4 per cent felt the requirement of experience is another challenge. “Experience should be insisted on for fresh job-seekers,” they felt.

The next challenge is to get a job that matches their qualifications. 14.8 per cent of respondents felt the jobs available in the market did not match the majors they studied in universities and colleges.

The private sector seemed to offer a wider range of jobs than the public sector. Only 10.7 per cent of respondents encountered difficulty in finding their first jobs in the private sector.

Similarly, 10.7 per cent claim most of the employers prefer expatriates.

Even after finding a job in the government or private sector, 8.1 per cent of fresh graduates found the work environment tough and not suiting them.

Surprisingly, parents were blamed for their employment problems. 1.9 per cent believed parents’ interfere in employment matters prevented them from getting their first job.

The survey was conducted online through the official handle of Youth Vision. Launched in 2010, Youth Vision is one of the most active youth institutions in Oman whose mission is to create a productive and leading Omani youth who act as role models for their peers.
