Sultanate marks World Telecom Day

MUSCAT: The Sultanate joins the rest of the world in marking the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) which falls on May 17 every year; the founding of ITU and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1968. The statistics show that as of the end of 2017, the number of fixed lines stood at 320,799 compared to 297,094 in 2016. The number of public phones stood at 6,801 and the number of digital network for the integrated services stood at 45,491 compared to 43,672 at the end of 2016. The number of fixed lines connected to IP stood at 122,949 at the end of 2017 compared to 73,377 at the end of 2016.


The number of wireless lines stood at 1,676 at the end of 2017 compared to 1,574 lines at the end of 2016. The number of mobile subscribers stood at 6,943,910 including 6,293,098 prepaid subscribers and 650,812 postpaid. As for the internet subscription, the total number of fixed internet users stood at 351,335 including 2,409 low speed internet subscribers (less than 256 KB/S) and 348,926 fixed broadband subscribers (more than 256 KB/S). The number of broadband mobile internet users stood at 4,351,583 and the international internet capacity stood at 546,884 megabytes. — ONA
