Sultanate marks World Heritage Day

MUSCAT: The Sultanate, represented by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, marks the World Heritage Day, which falls on April 18 each year under the theme ‘Heritage for Generations’.


The Sultanate’s celebration this year is the implementation of a special programme at Al Buraimi University College in the Governorate of Al Buraimi and Nizwa Cultural Centre in the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah.


In the Nizwa Cultural Centre there are a number of events, including the opening of an exhibition entitled ‘Eye on Heritage’ that presents the products of students, such as research and studies and works of art, such as models, painting and photographs, or individual or collective projects.


The exhibition also highlights the efforts to restore the Samayil Fort and pictures of various rare Omani manuscripts.


In addition, a workshop will be organised on ‘The Use of Heritage in Teaching’ at Nizwa Cultural Centre next Sunday and targets teachers to educate them about how to use various tangible and intangible cultural heritage in the educational process and instilling knowledge and belonging to some elements of national identity.


In Al Buraimi University College, the Ministry of Heritage and Culture will carry out a number of different lectures and will continue for two days, in addition to an exhibition accompanying the archaeological exhibits of the latest excavations carried out by the ministry.


The first lecture was on Underwater Cultural Heritage, included the definition of underwater cultural heritage, the importance of submerged monuments, the presentation of types and forms of underwater cultural heritage, and the Sultanate’s experience in underwater archaeology.


The second lecture entitled ‘Combating Illegal Trafficking in Cultural Property’ dealt with trafficking in illegal cultural property.


The third lecture on ‘The Documentation of Historical Monuments in the Sultanate’ dealt with the role of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture in the preservation of historical monuments, the project of recording historical monuments (the first phase), the project of documenting historical and archaeological monuments (second phase), in addition to talking about archaeological monuments in the Governorate of Al Buraimi and documentary studies of the Omani neighbourhoods.


In the fourth lecture entitled ‘Archaeological Collectibles’, about highlighting the archaeological work of the ministry in the various governorates of the Sultanate, as well as addressing the archaeological collectibles and findings recently discovered. — ONA
