Sultanate marks International Day for Protection of Ozone Layer

Muscat: The Sultanate, represented by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, marked the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, which falls on 16 September each year under the theme “Keep Cool and Carry on”.

A ceremony was held in the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs today to celebrate the occasion with the launch of the third version of the initiative “Ozone Umbrella Protects the Future of Our Children”.

Najib bin Ali al Rowas, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, the chief guest said that the Sultanate has ratified both the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and its amendments in London, Copenhagen, Montreal and Beijing as per Royal Decrees since 1998.

The Sultanate’s ratification to the conventions stems from its belief in supporting efforts of the international community to address the challenges of various environmental problems, including the depletion of the ozone layer and confronting challenges facing environmental, climatic and ecological systems.

The Sultanate, having accepted its membership in the ozone layer protection agreements, was classified as a Party of Article 5 of the Montreal Protocol.

Activities of the Sultanate’s celebration of the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer 2018 include several scientific, cultural and recreational activities in the Ministry’s General Diwan, as well as some schools and commercial centers in the Governorate of Muscat and the rest of the Sultanate’s governorates. –ONA
