Sultan Qaboos Award for Sailing awarded in Bordeaux

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Defence, represented by the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) on Sunday celebrated the handing over of the 7th Sultan Qaboos Award for Sailing at the conclusion of the International Sail Training and Tall Ships Conference, 2017 in Bordeaux, France during November 30-December 2. This year’s prize was claimed by the Sail Training Association Latvia (STA-Latvia) in recognition of its achievements in training sailing skills to young volunteers especially those with special needs and also for winning nine international tall ships’ races.


Several government and private organisations, as well as those interested in global sailing competed for the award.


The award ceremony was presided over by Shaikh Dr Ghazi bin Said al Rawas, the Sultanate’s Ambassador to France, in the presence of Staff Commodore Said bin Abdullah al Saadi, Senior Staff Officer at RNO, Commodore Salim bin Nasser al Qasmi, Military attaché at the Sultanate’s embassy in France and a number of RNO officers, officials from Bordeaux,

the honorary chairman and the members of the board of trustees of Sail Training International, organisers of the event, heads of sailing associations, shipmasters and other stakeholders.


The Sultan Qaboos Award for Sailing is the world’s most prestigious sailing award. It also symbolises Oman’s maritime glory. It is aimed at supporting sail training particularly for youth and people with special needs as well as fostering love and friendship among the crews of the ships participating in the tall ship races.
