Muscat, June 2 - Sufyan Mehmood Mohammad has been a constant in the Oman national cricket team since he made his debut in 2009.

The 26-year-old is the only Omani national in the current Oman squad and has been the only one for a while now.

The all-rounder who has played about 12 games for Oman has been honing his skills by playing tournaments in various countries.

Sufyan’s latest trip was to Singapore about a week and a half back where he played in the Elite T20 Series.

The event had three teams in the fray — Singapore Crimsons, Singapore Stars and Singapore Crescents.

Players from Zimbabwe, Nepal and the UAE were also part of the event and the presence of the likes of Malcolm Waller and Elton Chigumbura added some meat to the event.

The lanky lad, who works for Fairtrade LLC, which is a part of Enhance group, had a decent outing at the five-day event representing the Crimsons.

In the final match of the tournament against Singapore Stars, Sufyan came up with a stellar performance scalping three wickets for 17 runs.

Sufyan’s scalps also included the wicket of Zimbabwean Test regular Waller.

“It was a great experience for me to be able to play against Test players like Malcolm Waller. Earlier, I had played with Test players in other tournaments but I was part of their team and not playing against them. This tournament was a competitive experience for me. It gave me exposure and confidence that will help my game a lot,’’ Sufyan stated.

Sufyan had earlier participated in an All-Stars charity cricket tournament in the UK and a few months back was in Nepal for an event as well.

Talking about the purpose of playing these tournaments, Sufyan says he wants to play for Oman for a long period of time.

“I would like to make myself a permanent member of the Oman team and also play another World Cup for the Oman team,’’ he added.

Sufyan had the opportunity to interact with former Pakistan captain and batting sensation Shahid Afridi at the Singapore event.

“Shahid Afridi has assured me that he will come to Oman sometime,’’ he said.

Sufyan was very thankful to Oman Cricket for allowing him to participate in all the tournaments. The all-rounder also thanked his family for being his constant support system

Sufyan said the tournament in Singapore was very well organised and despite the inclement weather conditions, all the foreign players were looked after very well. The Omani lad stated that with his exploits on the cricket field he wants to be an inspiration for more Omani youngsters to play cricket.
