By Business Reporter — MUSCAT: APRIL 16 - Global energy operator SUEZ has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Muscat-based MEDRC Water Research to support the training of a second batch of young Omanis in various technical aspects of water desalination.

The MoU was signed by Thierry Dezenclos, General Manager — Operations & Management, SUEZ (Barka Desalination Co), and Ciaran O’Cuinn, Director — MEDRC Water Research, at the Centre’s Al Hail complex yesterday.

The training programme, dubbed ‘Tahlya’, aims to build capacity in the water desalination sector and provide young Omanis with the necessary skills to secure employment in this rapidly expanding sector.

Earlier, 18 Omanis representing the first batch of recruits to benefit from the Tahlya training programme, received their graduation certificates yesterday.

The two-month-long training programme, which ran from February 12 to April 13, was sponsored by BP Oman.  Yaqoob al Kiyumi, Acting CEO — Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP), handed out the certificates at a brief graduation event. Also present was Khalid al Kindi, Deputy General Manager — BP Oman.

“We are proud to witness the graduation of the first batch of trainees from the  Tahlya Training Programme, which provided young nationals with skills and knowledge, enabling them to play an important role in the desalination industry,” said Shabib Mohammed al Maamari, Communications and External Affairs Manager at BP Oman.

Tahlya aims to equip graduates with skills to work as operators and supervisors in the fast-evolving desalination industry in Oman.

The journey of the first batch included theory and practical training as well as placement in Seawater Reverse Osmosis plants for two weeks as observational interns, giving them real world experience.

The second batch was introduced in the training programme as soon as the first batch graduated, enabling them to perceive and share the success of batch one as well as inspire them to attain similar goals.
