By Kaushalendra Singh — SALALAH: May 10 - Fisheries Training Institute Salalah showcased courses, facilities and students’ skills to visiting company executives, officials from Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE) and Public Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises during an open day event. The institute authorities impressed upon the importance of vocational education and training and the students’ abilities to hit the job market soon after the completion of the courses, which are designed to cater to the needs of local job market.
The event chief guest Hamoud al Gassabi, Director General of Raysut Industrial Estate, was impressed with the level of confidence of the students and facilities being offered by the Institute. He assured all possible assistance and engagement with the Institute, which would result in strengthening the capabilities of the students who were undergoing different technical courses in the Institute. The students impressed the visiting dignitaries and company representatives with their confidence level and technical skills and called for more such engagement with local business houses so that the students get accommodated soon after becoming graduates.
Mohammed Ahmed al Ghassani, Director of the Public Authority for SMEs in Salalah, expressed happiness over enthusiasm shown by the students while taking part in the Open Day and exhorted them to take advantage of existing government facilities to emerge as successful entrepreneurs.
“Through this open day I came to know about the strength of the students and call upon them to become job giver instead of becoming a job seeker. A well thought enterprise is both profitable and opportunity for more jobs. This is a good platform for the companies and the students to know each other and seek co-operation,” he said.
Musthail Khasoob, who works as a lecturer in the Institute, explained about the courses being offered by the Institute. “Courses are mainly vocational here. Vocational training centres and fisheries training institutes are considered as mainstay working towards building and developing the skills,” he said. The Fisheries Training Institute offers vocational education and training courses and the students get vocational diploma, vocational apprenticeship and vocational training courses. Under vocational diploma, the students have to devote two academic years in addition to foundation period and the trainee must clear the foundation programme. During study the student will have to go through continuous and final assessments.
The approved specialisations for the engineering programme are: electrical engineering, electronics engineering, air-conditioning and refrigeration, automotive technology, mechanical engineering, welding and metal fabrication, construction and building engineering and woods technology.
The students also have options of studying Agriculture techniques; Health and beauty programme; Business studies programme and Fisheries training programme.
