State Council member elected to IPU Assembly

MUSCAT: The Sultanate participated in the 136th session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, which began on April 1 in Dhaka, focusing on taking decisive action to end rising social, political and economic inequalities and to ensure no interference with the internal affairs of states in the present global context. The Omani delegation was headed by Khalid bin Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of Majlis Ash’shura.

Representing the State Council were Dr Raya bint Salim al Manthriya and Naashiah bint Saud al Kharoosi. Shaikh Ali bin Nasser al Mahrouqi, Majlis Ash’shura Secretary-General, and members Anabe bin Alabd bin Suhail bin Jadad, Abdullah bin Mohammed al Balushi, Ali bin Salim al Jabri and Mohammed bin Khalid Al Rushaidi represented the Majlis Ash’shura.


Dr Raya, member of the State Council, was elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Young Parliamentarians Forum in Dhaka on Saturday. Naashiah al Kharousi, the State Council and Bureau member is the Vice-President of the Coordinating Committee of Women Parliamentarians for Women of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.


The theme of this year’s IPU Assembly is “Redressing Inequalities: Delivering on Dignity and wellbeing for all”.


The Bangladesh parliament is hosting IPU Assembly, the century-old organisation of world legislators. 1,348 delegates including 650 parliament members, 53 speakers, deputy speakers and 209 female parliamentarians of 131 countries are attending the mega event. They will discuss various issues focusing on redressing inequalities, ensuring empowerment of women and the role of parliament in preventing outside interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states during their deliberations in various sessions.


The IPU, established in 1889 with its headquarters in Switzerland, is the focal point for global parliamentary dialogues for peace, development, and cooperation among nations, and serves to safeguard representative democracy. The inaugural ceremony took place on Saturday and the Governing Council will convene on April 2, 5 to consider and take decisions on a host of matters relating to the functioning and activities of the IPU.


The Assembly will start its General Debate on April 2 with the high-level segment reserved for Speakers of Parliament. At its sittings on April 4,5, the Assembly will adopt resolutions on the emergency item and on the subject items taken up by the Standing Committees. All four Standing Committees will meet during the 136th IPU Assembly.
