MUSCAT: Startup Oman, Sultanate’s only platform created by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs, and the ‘home of entrepreneurship’ hosted the May edition of Caribou Chats on May 10. “Caribou Chats” is an educational programme designed specifically for Oman’s startup community. It aims to promote the entrepreneurial lifestyle, with all of its daily hurdles and learnings. Dawood al Wahaibi, founder of Five Oceans, spoke about Startup Oman stage. He is a fisheries specialist with over 18 years of experience in both the private and the public sectors.

Joining Dawood was Shaima Al Lawati. Shaima is the Founder & CEO of Destination Sustainability. She has over 16 years’ experience with various organizations developing sustainability strategies and programmes.  These companies include Bank Muscat, Shell and Vale Oman. She is a vice chairperson for Oman Road safety association. In the event, Dawood highlighted the importance of engaging the local community where his factory is based, saying:

“Taking the local community into consideration has affected our business tremendously. Giving them a tour of our facilities before opening, and giving them priority when selling fish has turned the whole community into advocates on our behalf. This “social license to operate” is crucial to our success.”

On the other hand, Shaima spoke about the importance of long term CSR investment, saying: “Most companies adjust their CSR strategies every year, taking on new projects. However it takes at least three years to measure true impact of any project. Companies need to understand that CSR is a long term investment, and treat it accordingly.

“Having both Shaima and Dawood as speakers provided immense value to our program. Caribou Chats is designed to showcase successful local entrepreneurs. Their work in sustainability is crucial for the development of Oman, and we’re very pleased to have hosted them this month.” said Ali Daud, Co-founder of Startup Oman.

The next Startup Oman event will be Startup Grind on May 21.
