MUSCAT: The Sultanate, represented by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, will join countries the rest of the world to mark the World Standards Day, which falls on October 14th every year. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Standards Make Cities Smarter”.

Sami bin Salim al Sahib, Acting Director-General of Standards and Metrology, said that the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), in cooperation with the International Electrotechnical Commission and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), celebrate the theme of the day and circulate the same to all member countries to focus efforts on that area. He said that the selection of this year’s slogan “Standards Make Cities Smarter” aims at conveying a message that sufficient fresh water; universal access to cleaner

energy; the ability to travel efficiently from one point to another; a sense of safety and security: these are the kinds of promises modern cities must fulfil if they are to stay competitive and provide a decent quality of life to their citizens. This year’s slogan focused on the role of standards in achieving that goal.

He pointed out that building a smart city is highly complex. Every city faces its own challenges and requires its own mix of solutions.

He pointed out that standards open the door for bigger options than products and services as they help in increasing competition and enhancing innovation.
