Sri Lanka hammered a hapless Kazakhstan 6-0 in the inaugural match of the Men’s Asian Games Qualifiers 2018 hockey championship in Muscat on Thursday. After taking first 20 minutes to settle down at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, Sri Lanka started the scoring spree with a double goal in the 22nd minute. Dhammika Ranasingha netted the first goal of the tournament through a penalty corner and Rajitha Kulathunga made it 2-0 with a field goal in the same minute.

Anuradha Rathnayake’s brilliant field goal increased the lead for the Lankans in the 45th minute.

Three minutes later, Lanka spoiled all hopes of a Kazakh comeback with another two goals through penalty corners. Damith Bandara and Dhammika hit the target in the 48th minute to give a sound 5-0 lead for Lanka.

Sandaruwan Sudusinghe completed the scoreline with a field goal in the 53rd minute.

Kazakh players desperately tried to pull one goal back but could not capitalise on a penalty corner that came their way in the final minutes of the match.

Aman Yelubayev of Kazakhstan and Damith Bandara of Sri Lanka received yellow cards during the final quarter of the Pool B match.
