MUSCAT: The Risk Management office (RMO) at SQU, in collaboration with the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University organised a two-day workshop on ‘Bio Safety’ at the College.

The workshop targeted professionals involved in biology Laboratory practices.

The main objective of the event was to create awareness in Bio-Safety in Laboratories in order to uplift laboratory safety practices.

Dr Salim Al Harthi, Director of Risk Management Office, at Sultan Qaboos University stated that working in Laboratories requires special skill and training on the best practices and procedures to minimize risk.

“Therefore, raising awareness and building competencies plays a key role. A few principals and methods underlying the current biosafety practices are: Bio-hazards spillage, Incident reporting, Waste Management and autoclaving, laboratory ergonomics and Risk Assessment. The Workshop content conformed with the Operational Risk framework of the Risk Management Office of Sultan Qaboos University”.

Working with biology related materials requires precautions that guarantee the safety of people handling such materials, that of the environment, including laboratory users and other personnel who could be exposed to materials unknown to them.

Despite bio-safety measures and guidelines, laboratory infections, usually occur more or less commonly, suggesting that compliance with bio-safety rules must always be complied with.

Nonetheless, despite such regulations and the lack of major accidents, there is concern about the health and safety of individuals and the environment they are exposed to it.

The workshop presented a brief overview of the development of the current bio-safety practice along with the methods in use. The workshop also presented an approach of evaluating the effectiveness of bio-safety measures.

Dr Al Harthi recommended that the evidence base of bio-safety practice be strengthened further.

The participants represented from scientific colleges of SQU with active participation and contributed to successful outcome.

These workshop was instructed by three members in College of Medicine and Health Sciences (Khuloud, Zamzam, and Munawer) as a part of the vision and mission of RMO to decentralise the safety practices across different units of SQU.
