MUSCAT: SQU and Shell Oman signed an agreement for a student team from the University to participate in the Shell Eco-marathon-Asia that will take place in early 2018.

The agreement was signed by Dr Ali bin Saud al Bimani, Vice-Chancellor of Sultan Qaboos University, Chris Breeze, Shell’s Country Chairman in Oman, and Mohammed bin Mahmood al Balushi, Shell Oman Marketing Company’s Chief Executive Officer.

This will be the 34th season for Shell Eco-marathon, and it provides a safe yet challenging competition for students to design, build, and drive the world’s most energy-efficient vehicles.

The Shell Eco-marathon competition is now simplified into the three-energy categories: internal combustion, battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell.

Muna al Shukaili, External Relations Manager at Shell Development Oman, said: “Sultan Qaboos University has done an excellent work representing Oman at Shell Eco-marathon. In addition to the experience of engaging in a global dialogue on the future of energy transition, the students work within their own teams and the other competing teams from different parts of the world to help them gain and improve key professional and personal competencies and skills, such as project planning, time management, problem solving, communications and many others.”

Mohammed bin Ali al Farsi, GM, External and Government, Legal Affairs and Business Development at Shell Oman Marketing Company, said: “Shell Oman’s technological capacity, customer-perspective, operational experience and market knowledge mean we are at the forefront of many interesting new technologies and opportunities for the communities which we are part of. Shell Eco-marathon aims to inspire young innovators and future entrepreneurs from Oman and engage them in real actions related to the future of mobility and energy transition while empowering them to contribute to sustainable development efforts in the Sultanate.”

Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2018 will see 24 on-track awards with prize money of $2,000 for winners in both Prototype and Urban Concept categories. In addition, teams will also be competing for five off-track awards: Communications, Vehicle Design, Technical Innovation, Safety and Perseverance and Spirit of the Event.
