SQU offers residences to outstation students

Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) will provide housing units to students outside the institution premises, provided they have homes that is situated 100km away from Muscat. In a statement, the university said the housing units equipped with all essential facilities will help students to concentrate on their studies and in the process it will also reduce the number of drop-outs within the first academic year.


The SQU media department quoting Dr Ali Saud al Bemani, Vice-Chancellor, the Al Raha Residences have a provision of rooms for 1,200 students, daily transportation to the university (round-trips), food and laundry services, photocopying and printing services and prayer rooms.


Apart from provisions for a study hall and entertainment facilities, the university will take care that the student accommodation will offer maximum comfort to the students. Special facilities will be offered to students with special needs.


The vice-chancellor said that the speed of internet services has been upgraded to 580MB to 1,800 Mb and a project is under way in coordination with Royal Oman Police to launch smart cards for students during the academic-year 2017-18.


Previously, Omani female postgraduate students were given on-campus residence in accordance with the University Article (546/2009) for a small fee. Male postgraduate students were offered on-campus residence though the university’s housing department would assist postgraduate students in finding a suitable accommodation close to the university.
