SQU marks Arabic language day

By Amani Nasser — MUSCAT: Dec 18: The Arabic Language International Day was celebrated by the Arabic Language and Literature Department at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) on Sunday. The seminar was aimed at evaluating the programmes developed for popularising Arabic language internationally. Dr Abdullah al Kindi, Dean of College of Arts and Social Sciences, lauded the efforts of the Arabic department in developing new methodologies in this direction. He pointed out how the department had designed special programmes in cooperation with other specialists.


Dr Mohammed al Mashani, Head of the Department of Arabic Literature, spoke about the importance of Arabic language globally since it is the fourth highest spoken language in the world. He dwelt on the challenges that the language faced.


The seminar comprised two sessions. The first one was presented by Dr Raya al Mandhari, Assistant Professor, Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the College of Education.


Dr Raya spoke about the knowledge economy and explained how Arabic language can “transform people from knowledge consumers to knowledge producers” through investment, creativity, innovation and information technology.


She said the Omani society should depend on knowledge through three main foundations: process of dissemination of knowledge, process of producing knowledge and process of applied knowledge in practice.


The next session was presented by Ibrahim Mohamed Ainami, Consultant, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Intel Center for Arabic Language. He spoke about the role of Arab people in enhancing the spread of Arabic language.


The other presentations were about innovations and curricula relating to Arabic language.
